Hellboy makes his first trip to Africa, accompanied by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm during an investigation involving hyenas. Hellboy is separated from Bruttenholm and lost for a week in the Serengeti. Once recovered, he has no memory of what happened during that week.

Later, Hellboy remembers he encountered the spirit of Africa herself, manifested as a giant rhinoceros.

On Calton Hill, near Edinburgh, Hellboy encounters fairies for the first time. They also make visits to Harry H. Middleton, an old school friend of the professor. Together, they investigate the phantom hand at St. Alban and the mastiff Braunton Burrows.

Hellboy, on an unofficial six month leave, teams up with three monster-hunting Mexican wrestler brothers. After a night of heavy drinking, the youngest brother, Esteban, is abducted by a gang of monsters. Later, Hellboy is challenged to a wrestling match. There, he fights and kills the transformed monstrosity that was once Esteban. Afterward, Hellboy wanders drunkenly around Mexico until the BPRD finds him blacked out in a local bar and brings him home.

Hellboy, Liz, and Abe investigate the circumstances surrounding Bruttenholm's death, leading to confrontation with Rasputin. In an underground temple under the house, Rasputin attempts to release Ogdru Jahad from its prison by channeling Liz’s elemental power through Sadu Hem. Abe is possessed by the spirit of Elihu Cavendish and stabs Rasputin with a harpoon. An explosion reduces the Cavendish house to ashes, also destroying Sadu Hem. Hellboy destroys the mortal remains of Rasputin, choosing not to listen to anything about his origin.

1997

March— Romania
In search of the remains of the vampire Vladamir Giurescu in hopes of preventing his resurrection, Hellboy battles the goddess Hecate, ultimately destroying Giurescu’s castle and grievously injuring Hecate. The ghost of Rasputin offers eternal life to Ilsa Haupstein by enclosing her in an iron maiden – a gift from the Baba Yaga. Giurescu sacrifices to Hecate, and a share of his spirit leaves his body to take control of the iron maiden. Hellboy learns he embodies the Beast of the Apocalypse, a fate he rejects.

Meanwhile, Liz Sherman (recently returned to active service), discovers a human-sized homunculus. In an attempt to get rid of her pyrokinesis, Liz transfers her power to the homunculus, bringing it to life.

 

The body of the vampire is later stolen from a warehouse on its way to BPRD headquarters.

April, Ruins of the Capatineni Monastery, Romania
In search of the Homunculus that stole Liz’s power, Hellboy returns to Romania. There, the first of the two Mischrasse homunculi creates a giant body made of human fat, but the second homunculus destroys his "brother" with Liz’s stolen power. Deprived of her power, Liz withers and dies in a Romanian institute, but is brought back to life when the homunculus (Christened “Roger” by Hellboy) returns her power, sacrificing his own life.

Dr. Cobb and Dr. Roger Roddel dissect the homunculus, but Abe Sapien manages to revive Roger with electricity. Scientists endow Roger with an electric generator and, unbeknownst to Hellboy and Roger, implant a bomb.

Consultant Kate Corrigan joins the BPRD full time.

Hellboy receives an old piece of paper with a drawing of a stone hand. The text is written in ancient Lemurian, but translates to "The Right Hand of Doom."

1999

May 19, Lockmaben, Scotland
Hellboy and Abe Sapien face Bromhead in a mansion, the scene of terrible acts of witchcraft in 1969. Bromhead escapes, but is turned half-lizard as punishment for his impudence. While fighting the demon Ualac, he’s overpowered, and he has a vision of King Dagda of the goblins. Hellboy defeats Ualac and faces Astaroth, Grand Duke of the infernal regions. Astaroth tells Hellboy that he has a place reserved in hell and the crown of the Apocalypse awaits him there.

Hellboy and BPRD agent Kate Corrigan's meet at a circle of stones to discuss recent revelations about "the purpose" of Hellboy on Earth.

Hellboy vanquishes the demon Caypor in an amusement park.

December, Sweden
A lightning strike reveals what appears to be the skeletal remains of the Norse god Thor and his iron hammar Mjolnir. No one is able to lift the hammer but Hellboy, which is immediately welded to his right hand by a lightning strike. Hellboy and Abe Sapien enlist the expert help Edmond Aickman and his daughter Pernilla, but Aikman betrays him (again) and dies while trying to summon the King of the Ice Giants. The rest of the year is spent fighting ice giants.

2000

February, the Ural Mountains, above the Arctic Circle
After leaving the BPRD again, Liz Sherman journeys to a monastery in the hope of learning to control her pyrokiesis. She became a student of Master Gheghen and spends two years at the monastery.

Roger becomes an official agent of the BPRD

2001

February 5, Hunt Castle, Austria

Hellboy is informed of the bomb planted in Roger and is given the device to activate it before their field mission. Hellboy is enraged at Tom Manning’s gall and informs him he quits the BPRD once their mission is done.

Afterward, Hellboy and Roger, guided by Laura Karnstein, Austrian secret service, are sent to the site of the castle to intercept a Nazi spacecraft. Laura is in fact Inger von Klempt, the granddaughter of Herman von Klempt. Hellboy and Roger fight von Klempt (and Kriegaffe # 10), along with a small army of Nazis turned into frogs, and the entity known as the "Conqueror Worm". Hellboy also encounters the alien who had been sent to kill him in 1944, just before he died. The ghost of Rasputin tells Inger his body, newly transformed by the breath of the Conqueror Worm, contains the seed of a lifetime for a new breed of men and Ragna Rok is not just the end of the world, but a new beginning. Inger is killed by the ghost of Lobster Johnson.

When it’s over, confused by what he has learned about his origins and enraged with the Bureau over what they did to Roger, Hellboy leaves to travel around Africa.

2002

June, Africa
Hellboy eats bananas from a haunted banana tree and finds himself caught in a hail of stones and garbage for three days, caused by the ghost Kinyamkela.

October, Africa
After several months of wandering aimlessly, Hellboy encounters the old witch doctor Mohlomin. They camp together on the plain and he appears in his dreams as the spirits of Africa threaten him to leave. When he wakes, Mohlomin leads him to the ocean where he’s swallowed by a wave. There he’s attacked by mermaids and held prisoner by the sea hag, the Bog Roosh.

 2002-2004

Hellboy is held captive by the Bog Roosh, bound in chains under the sea. After escaping he is lost at sea for an innumerable amount of time until he arrives at an island full of the ghosts of pirates. There he encounters Hecate and a giant fish monster that impales him with a giant lance. Afterward, a sorcerer drains Hellboy of his blood and kills him. Somehow Hellboy awakens from death with the help of the medicine man Molhlomin coming to him in something like a dream. The sorcerer, now with a body made of Hellboy’s blood, tells the tale of the origins of Ogdru Jahad, the creation of the world, and the Right Hand of Doom.  He also speaks of the Plauge of Frogs that the B.P.R.D. is battling back in America. The sorcerer then becomes the monster-god Urgo-Hem and Hellboy somehow gathers the strength to destroy him with the help of Molhomin’s bell. Hellboy then heads back to sea.
